Narrative Assessment - Literacy

Learner: Jack                        Learning Coach:  Mr Hattie                 Date: 26 June 2015
Learning Area: Learning Habitat 2 - Literacy
Learning Observed
During writing today Jack was working on adding Capital Letters and Full Stops in the correct place, as he has been missing them out during writing time. The task was to write a passage of writing that has no capitals or full stops in it at all. Then he is to add in the capitals and full stops into the passage in the correct place. I was thrilled to see that when Jack sat down and focused on the task he was able to place them in the correct place. Once Jack had finished with his writing he came up to get it checked off with me. I was currently working with a learner so he had to wait. This is when a friend who had already finished came up and said that he had done it correctly he can check it for him. It was great to see Jack take this on board and allow someone to check his work. It shows that Jack knows that there are people who can help and if the Learning Coach is busy he can find someone who he knows is a reliable choice to check his work.

Key Competencies/Vision Principles
During this lesson the Key Competencies that were being shown were “thinking” as Jack had to think about where the correct places were to put the full stops and capital letters. This took a lot of reading and thinking about what makes sense. “Managing Self” was being shown as this was an independent activity. Jack was showing “Relating to others” as the idea of peer checking is one where you have to relate to others and how they feel. This is a commendable quality.
Next Learning Steps
Jack’s  next learning steps are:
  • ensure that he uses capitals letters and full stops at all times when writing.
  • Start to experiment with other punctuation such as commas and speech marks.
