Today in mathematics Jack was working on adding and subtracting numbers to 20. We were using our hands and fingers to help us. During our lesson Jack noticed that he had achieved this skill. He said to me “Mr Hattie I am good at this. Can we start adding 10?” This was a great reflection. Jack had thought about what he was learning. Because at the start Jack was working really hard to solve the problems and by the end he didn’t have to think about it. Jack realised that it was hard to start with, which is great to see. We next look at the planning for the week and wrote what we are going to work on. Jack wrote in that he wanted to work on adding 10. He also said “I would like to work in my book on a sheet”. He was able to work with a buddy to decide what the lesson for the rest of the week will look like. It was amazing seeing the collaboration. Comments like “what do you think?” “I need to work on”. This was great to see because he was thinking about his own learning and what his next learning steps are.

Key Competencies/Vision Principles

Jack has shown the Key Competency “thinking” because he was able to think about what his needs are for his learning and where he needs to go. He was able to collaborate with others in his group. Jack let his buddy say what she needs and plan the lesson with her. He showed “managing self” he did this by deciding for himself what he wants to work on for his lessons. Jack was able to show “understanding” because he knew what he was already good at and what he wanted to learn. This shows that he has the understanding of ‘learning steps’.
