Learning Observed
Today in mathematics Jack was working on adding and subtracting numbers to 20. We were using our hands and fingers to help us. During our lesson Jack noticed that he had achieved this skill. He said to me “Mr Hattie I am good at this. Can we start adding 10?” This was a great reflection. Jack had thought about what he was learning. Because at the start Jack was working really hard to solve the problems and by the end he didn’t have to think about it. Jack realised that it was hard to start with, which is great to see. We next look at the planning for the week and wrote what we are going to work on. Jack wrote in that he wanted to work on adding 10. He also said “I would like to work in my book on a sheet”. He was able to work with a buddy to decide what the lesson for the rest of the week will look like. It was amazing seeing the collaboration. Comments like “what do you think?” “I need to work on”. This was great to see because he was thinking about his own learning and what his next learning steps are.

Evidence of learning

The writing above is the learning that Jack was doing this week. Since he has achieved this learning he has replanned for the rest of the week. The below is the next learning step.
Key Competencies/Vision Principles
Jack has shown the Key Competency “thinking” because he was able to think about what his needs are for his learning and where he needs to go. He was able to collaborate with others in his group. Jack let his buddy say what she needs and plan the lesson with her. He showed “managing self” he did this by deciding for himself what he wants to work on for his lessons. Jack was able to show “understanding” because he knew what he was already good at and what he wanted to learn. This shows that he has the understanding of ‘learning steps’.

Self-Portraits
Learner: Jack Learning Coach: Luisa Maloni Date: 10th March, 2015
Learning Area: iExperience: Self Portraits
Learning Observed
During iExperience, the learners have been involved in a rotation of Visual arts, Music, Dance and Drama. In the Visual Arts- learners had the opportunity to discover how other artists tell a story about who they are through self-portraits. We looked at how we are the same and how we are different and how artists celebrate and accentuate what is special and different about themselves through their work. I observed that Jack was very involved, enthusiastic and focussed on this activity and took special care to draw his own features as they are in real life. He added detail e.g. the buttons on his shirt. Jack models his artwork on the portraits of Frida Kahlo by including symbols that represent things he loves e.g. maths and basketball. Jack has been very committed to finishing his self-portrait and has been using the time before school to work on his drawing.

Evidence of learning
Jack tells a story about himself and his personality through his self-portrait. I can’t wait to see it finished in colour!
Key Competencies/Vision Principles
Jack’s artwork shows that he has Capabilities in observational drawing and attention to expressing what makes him unique. He makes Connections between what he loves and expresses them in a visual and symbolic way. Jack demonstrates the key competency of Managing Self by working on his drawing using his own initiative.
