iExperience Narrative Assessment - Machines that Build

Learner:  Jack and Shokrullah      Learning Coach: M Lennon - LH2      Date:   3 November 2016
Learning Area:  iExperience
NZC Achievement Objective:  Level 1; Technology; Characteristics of Technological Outcomes - Students will understand that technological outcomes are products or systems developed by people and have a physical nature and a functional nature.
Learning Observed
During iExperience Jack and Shokrullah have been learning about machines that build things.  They have been showing their curiosities about the purposes behind different machines, why they were invented, and collaborated on a design.

During this iExperience Jack and Shokrullah learned some background about different machines and their purposes.  Their favourites were the machines that had more than one purpose.

After learning about different machines and their purposes, Jack and Shokrullah built their own machine and could explain the reasons behind, and purpose of, this machine.

Jack and Shokrullah’s machine was a multi-purpose machine.  They started by building a strong base so that it could carry heavy objects without breaking apart.  Then they created instruments that could help build a house from one side, carry long poles from the other side, and as a bonus they also included a utensil for carrying heavy boxes.  I think this machine will be very useful in the building industry!

Evidence of learning

Jack and Shokrullah have made a marvellous machine!
Key Competencies/Vision Principles
During this learning, Jack and Shokrullah demonstrated that they were:
  • Connected - actively taking part in learning conversations and activities.
  • Capable - able to describe the purpose for his machine.
  • Curious - building and rebuilding machines to ensure they are stable enough to carry a load.
  • Managing Self  - using equipment in an appropriate manner.
Next Learning Steps
  • Keep developing curiosities about machines and their purposes by building bigger, better machines each time.
  • Discuss any new findings with peers to help them build stable, load bearing machines.

Narrative Assessment - iExplore - 1 July 2016

Learner:  Jack       Learning Coach:   Megan Croll - LH2           Date: 1 July  2016
Learning Area:  iExplore
Learning Observed
During iExplore today, some of the Learners were using the multilink cubes to construct a range of buildings, cars and spaceships.   Jack worked alongside other Learners to create an aircraft by himself.

Jack carefully crafted his design and was keen to show me what the different parts did.
Evidence of learning

Key Competencies/Vision Principles
Jack was Capable of staying on task to complete his chosen design.  He demonstrated Curiosity in this design process; Thinking about which piece he wanted to use and whether it would fit in the allocated space correctly.  Jack used the equipment carefully (Managing Self) and helped to put some of it away when asked.
Next Learning Steps
  • Extend on this design idea
  • Share his ideas with others and support them to use this equipment
  • Use other construction equipment to create a space aircraft

A Fraction of Maths

Learner: Jack              Learning Coach: T Morgan        Date: 15th June 2016
Learning Area: iDevelop - Maths
Learning Observed
After a 20 minute session on how to add fractions with common denominators, Jack chose to complete a follow up activity to help him develop the understanding of this new knowledge. He was able to add 3 fractions together with different numerators and common denominators (e.g. 12/27 + 7/27 + 23/27 = 42).
Evidence of learning
IMG_0901.JPG

Jack was able to add fractions with common denominators! I wonder if he can teach one of his peers his new learning?
Key Competencies/Vision Principles
Jack is developing his Capabilities in Maths. He was able to work by himself to Think about the fractions and add them together (Managing Self and Using Language, Symbols and Text). Jack was able to help his peers to understand how to add like fractions (Relating to Others) and was engaged in the task, determined to complete it all in that one day (Participating and Contributing).
Next Learning Steps
  • Add fractions with different denominators.
  • Add fractions to make 1 whole.
  • Order fractions with different denominators.
  • Share Learning with home.

Jack's Writing Narrative

Learner: Jack               Learning Coach: Mr Dyer                        Date: Week 3 - Term 1
Learning Area: Writing
Learning Observed
We have hit the ground running and are already challenging ourselves to identify what makes writing effective and how we can capture this learning in our own writing. We have identified that our best writing comes from the heart and involves sharing our thoughts, wonderings and feelings about a particular subject. We have also begun exploring ‘Show’ not ‘Tell’ to develop imagery and depth in our writing, along with writing about our sensory responses to daily events. Finally, through selecting elements of Who, What, Why, When, Where and How, we can focus on different elements of our writing in more detail.
Jack has begun to use some of the above writing techniques to make their writing #Oresome! He has the opportunity to write every day, and is involved in our author’s circles where they can seek advice and share their writing with myself and other learners. They are also invited to respond to areas for development at various stages of the writing process. It will be exciting to see how their writing develops over the course of the year starting from the example below which was one of their first pieces of independent writing.

On a Friday, Jack contributes to our group blog. We share our thoughts, wonderings and feelings about the previous week and collaborate with the other writing groups before posting on our habitat blog. Be sure to check out these blogs when you can.
Evidence of learning

This was Jack’s first effort at writing this year. It will be exciting to see how he progresses as the year goes on.
Key Competencies/Vision Principles

Thinking - Making sense of information, experiences and ideas.
Using language, symbols, and texts - Making sense of words, numbers and images.
Managing self - knowing when to lead, when to follow and when to act independently.
Relating to others - Interacting effectively in a range of contexts.
Participating and contributing - Being actively involved in school and the community

Curious
Collaborative
Connected
Capable

Jack has begun to show his capabilities in writing even at this early stage of the year. We are connecting with events from our lives to make writing real to us. We are doing a range of independent writing and more collaborative pieces.
Next Learning Steps
Jack should continue to write from the heart and visit the Author’s circle for regular input into his writing. Jack is encouraged to share their writing with family members and also with other audiences at school and home. This will give him a chance to receive authentic feedback that can be used to make their next piece of writing even better.
